Summary

From bestselling and award-winning author Sara Pennypacker comes the long-awaited sequel to Pax; this is a gorgeously crafted, utterly compelling novel about chosen families and the healing power of love。

It’s been a year since Peter and his pet fox, Pax, have seen each other。 Once inseparable, they now lead very different lives。 Pax and his mate, Bristle, have welcomed a litter of kits they must protect in a dangerous world。 Meanwhile Peter—newly orphaned after the war, wracked with guilt and loneliness—leaves his adopted home with Vola to join the Water Warriors, a group of people determined to heal the land from the scars of the war。

When one of Pax's kits falls desperately ill, he turns to the one human he knows he can trust。 And no matter how hard Peter tries to harden his broken heart, love keeps finding a way in。 Now both boy and fox find themselves on journeys toward home, healing—and each other, once again。

An achingly lovely follow up to the devastatingly beautiful first book。

Pax is, without a doubt, my all time favourite middle grade novel and I return to it at least once a year, so it was with some trepidation that I picked up its sequel。 I waited for the right time when I knew I had the time and mental energy to become absorbed by what I knew would be a stunning story。 I absolutely adored it。 Sara Pennypacker has imagined a wonderful continuation of Peter and Pax’s story。 I read it in a single sitting and bawled throughout most of it; the heartbreaking joy and sad Pax is, without a doubt, my all time favourite middle grade novel and I return to it at least once a year, so it was with some trepidation that I picked up its sequel。 I waited for the right time when I knew I had the time and mental energy to become absorbed by what I knew would be a stunning story。 I absolutely adored it。 Sara Pennypacker has imagined a wonderful continuation of Peter and Pax’s story。 I read it in a single sitting and bawled throughout most of it; the heartbreaking joy and sadness of the story, characters and setting。 My heart is full。 。。。more

3。5 starsThank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review。Clearly, the most obvious comparison between the original Pax and this one, is the difference in their endings。 Pax had what many would describe as a deeply unsatisfying ending, while Pax Journey Home offered much more closure in all aspects of Peter and Pax's lives。 I enjoyed the descriptions of the interactions between Pax and his fox family, particularly his spunky vixen, though I felt l 3。5 starsThank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review。Clearly, the most obvious comparison between the original Pax and this one, is the difference in their endings。 Pax had what many would describe as a deeply unsatisfying ending, while Pax Journey Home offered much more closure in all aspects of Peter and Pax's lives。 I enjoyed the descriptions of the interactions between Pax and his fox family, particularly his spunky vixen, though I felt like Peter's chapters were a bit slow moving。 I liked how Peter and Pax's storylines intertwined, and how Peter felt like his relationship with Pax had come full circle。 However, even with the more "acceptable" ending, I still preferred the original Pax, as I felt the story and the characters were stronger。 。。。more

An emotional sequel to Pax, this book lived up to the hype it's been getting in the library world。 I loved learning about Pax's new family and Peter's journey of healing after his losses。 There were decisions by both near the end that took me by complete surprise。 An emotional sequel to Pax, this book lived up to the hype it's been getting in the library world。 I loved learning about Pax's new family and Peter's journey of healing after his losses。 There were decisions by both near the end that took me by complete surprise。 。。。more

I read Pax back in 2016, thoroughly enjoyed it, and wanted to recommend it to all the elementary and middle-school library patrons I have know。 While I was excited to see that Sara Pennypacker has continued the story, this one just didn't draw me in like the original。 It may be the five years between the stories, the fact that the pandemic has definitely changed my reading expectations, or that I am far too old to be the target audience。 In this sequel, Peter is struggling with grief and Pax has I read Pax back in 2016, thoroughly enjoyed it, and wanted to recommend it to all the elementary and middle-school library patrons I have know。 While I was excited to see that Sara Pennypacker has continued the story, this one just didn't draw me in like the original。 It may be the five years between the stories, the fact that the pandemic has definitely changed my reading expectations, or that I am far too old to be the target audience。 In this sequel, Peter is struggling with grief and Pax has his own family。 This is a perfectly nice story, but I fear I may just be too old for anthropomorphism。 。。。more

Pax, Journey Home picks up a little after the end of the first Pax book。 Pax has moved on with his mate Bristle and Bristle's brother Runt。 Bristle recently had three kits and Pax is helping teach them the ways of the fox world。 When it seems that humans are again coming in large numbers, Pax sets out to find them a new home。 But, what Pax didn't realize is that the female kit followed him。 During their journey Pax is surprised to find Peter, the boy who raised him, is back near his old home。 Pe Pax, Journey Home picks up a little after the end of the first Pax book。 Pax has moved on with his mate Bristle and Bristle's brother Runt。 Bristle recently had three kits and Pax is helping teach them the ways of the fox world。 When it seems that humans are again coming in large numbers, Pax sets out to find them a new home。 But, what Pax didn't realize is that the female kit followed him。 During their journey Pax is surprised to find Peter, the boy who raised him, is back near his old home。 Peter is struggling with grief。 He had already lost his mother, lost then found and released Pax, and now his father has been killed in the war。 Peter has decided that the best thing to do is never allow anyone close enough to him that he could be hurt again。 He signs up to work with the Water Warriors who are working to help clean the water in the surrounding areas that have been contaminated by the war。 When his work takes him a little too close to where he last saw Pax, Peter has to decide whether to start to heal or continue to harden himself。 It's at that moment that Peter and Pax reconnect and Peter gets a second chance in several ways。I LOVED the first Pax book and was so excited when I saw there was another one。 This one is also beautifully written and alternates between Peter and Pax's points of view。 I wasn't as blown away by this one, but it's still a beautiful story of love between a boy and his fox that is expanding to the next generation in Sliver。 。。。more

Oh, how I loved this book! The first one was about a boy who had to leave his pet fox Pax during war time and told the separate adventures of the fox and the boy。 I didn't think this book could live up to that one but it did。 In this book, the boy is shut down and wounded from his losses during the war。 He wants to join the Water Warriors, who are purifying the water supply from the poisons of the war, but only as a way to get back to his old home and homestead it by himself。 Meanwhile Pax has h Oh, how I loved this book! Circumstance’s have changed and now we meet Pax again in a journey where he will again meet Peter。 Pennypacker weaves a beautiful story of failure, betrayal and ultimately redemption。 A new read aloud to add to “Pax”!

I’ve waited a long time for Pax to return and now, he’s a father to 3 baby kits。 Pax is excited about his new role and Bristle will be a great mother as she takes charge immediately。 Peter is living with Vola but he seems restless after the war。 His father’s ashes need to be scattered and he’s interested in the Water Warriors but Vola wants him there。 He’s determined to go so with his father’s ashes, he heads out to place them where they belong and then, to meet up with the Warriors。 I was feeli I’ve waited a long time for Pax to return and now, he’s a father to 3 baby kits。 Pax is excited about his new role and Bristle will be a great mother as she takes charge immediately。 Peter is living with Vola but he seems restless after the war。 His father’s ashes need to be scattered and he’s interested in the Water Warriors but Vola wants him there。 He’s determined to go so with his father’s ashes, he heads out to place them where they belong and then, to meet up with the Warriors。 I was feeling some emotional issues for Peter during this time as he backed away from those who were trying to be there for him。 Was he trying to be alone or was he trying to find himself? So much had happened to him lately that I’m sure he was lost inside and he probably wasn’t sure where he should land。 Meanwhile, Pax knows that it’s time for him to leave his family。 As Pax makes his journey, he spots humans in the forest。 They’re doing what they normally do yet this time, things get out of their control。 Pax realizes that he too is not alone, as he thought he was。 One of his kits has followed him and now, he must keep both of them safe as he tries to return his child back home。 It was interesting how both Pax and Peter were dealing with internal struggles。 They both were maturing and discovering issues about themselves and the world around them。 When the two of them met up again, their bond was just as strong as it was before which was emotional and exciting to see。 Beside the emotional bond that they have with each other, they also feel safe with each other which they both need。 I liked the sporadic illustrations through-out the book, the black-n-white pictures added another element to the book。 This was a great sequel to the first book but I feel that the ending was left open (I can only hope)。 " The advice was not enough to protect her。 Nothing would ever be enough。""Standing fur-to-fur, five foxes wailed, and the call sang of the absence that was theirs alone and of all the losses in the world。" 。。。more

I only realized this was the second book in a series (?) when I was more than half way through the book。 I still really enjoyed it and honestly didn’t even realize I was missing the first half of the story。 I’ll probably still pick up Pax since I enjoyed this one overall。

Peter and Pax find their way back together, but of course not in a straight line。 Peter is shutting everyone out so he won’t get hurt again, and Pax has a new family to protect。I enjoyed revisiting this pair, but there wasn’t the same adventure aspect of the first。The little Vixen’s name was a lovely endnote。

Pax (the fox) and Peter (his boy) are back in this sequel, and so is the story of love, acceptance, devotion and found family。 This book is as good as the first and a solid middle grades read。

This is a wonderful sequel to Pax。 I like the alternating narratives between Pax and Peter。 Themes include families, grief, humans impact on the environment, resilience。 Thanks to Libro。fm for the ALC of this title。

I love love Pax and really enjoyed meeting up with these two friends and seeing what they were up to。 I appreciated that Pax and Peter continued to evolve in the novel。 We saw them living their own lives but we also saw how they each impacted the other。This one needs to be on the shelves and suggested often。

This was just a great story and I felt like this book brought it full circle。

Pax and Peter shadow each other through most of this novel。 Both learn a lot about life not always being what one wants。 Good, quick read。

I loved the first Pax book and I wasn't disappointed by the second book! I think all young people should read this。 This is written mostly from the animal's prospective which sometimes we don't think about when we are doing things to our planet。 I loved the first Pax book and I wasn't disappointed by the second book! Really good! It's quite darker than Pax。 Peter is mourning the loss of his father and Pax and is pushing away the only one who is "like family" -- Vola。 Here is a young boy who has had to mature much more quickly than he should have and face things no boy should face。 Heartbreaking, but a wonderful ending。Highly recommend this series! The first time I read Pax, I was truly struck by the connection between humans and animals。 I have never experienced that firsthand, although I have friends and family members who have。 In this beautifully-written follow-up novel, readers find Peter and Pax a year after their final goodbye - each on their own journey to find their families and home。

This book is the sequel to Pax, which I read last year and absolutely loved。 Similar to its predecessor, this is a book that is easy to read (which, as middle grade, it should be), flows well, is interesting, but also has so much happening under the surface。In this book, both Peter and his former pet fox, Pax, are moving on from the events that closed the previous book。 Pax is building his family and using his instinct to learn how to protect it。 Peter is trying to determine what it means to hav This book is the sequel to Pax, which I read last year and absolutely loved。 Similar to its predecessor, this is a book that is easy to read (which, as middle grade, it should be), flows well, is interesting, but also has so much happening under the surface。In this book, both Peter and his former pet fox, Pax, are moving on from the events that closed the previous book。 Pax is building his family and using his instinct to learn how to protect it。 Peter is trying to determine what it means to have family, after having lost so much。 They both undertake journeys that bring them back to their former home。The story, again, is beautifully told and rendered。 I wrote about Pax that there was an underlying allegory about war and peace。 In this book, it feels less allegorical, but more of a meditation on family and belonging, and the courage it takes to find it。 。。。more
